WPMU 2.8.6 plus Plugin Upgrades

Friday, November 20th, 2009, 11:03 am MT - posted by Ross Madden

Dear All,

I have just upgraded BioWS to Wordpress MU 2.8.6 which was released a couple of days ago.  The upgrade went smoothly and all sites have had their databases updated.  I haven’t found a list of release notes though – probably a lot of security updates.

ALSO – I have upgraded the NextGEN Gallery, Viper’s Video Quicktags, and Contact Form 7 plugins to their most recent releases.

Please let me know if you notice anything goofy!  Enjoy!

Contact Form 7

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009, 10:04 am MT - posted by Ross Madden

I just installed a new plugin for generating Contact Forms on your BioWS site!

“If you value simplicity and flexibility, Contact Form 7 is a great choice.  It allows you to flexibly design the form and mail. You can manage multiple contact forms as well.  In addition, it supports many features including AJAX submitting, CAPTCHA, Akismet spam filtering, file uploading, etc.” – from the plugin website.

This plugin can be activated via the Plugin menu.  Please refer to the plugin site for documentation – http://contactform7.com

Plugin Update 10/01/2009

Thursday, October 1st, 2009, 4:01 pm MT - posted by Ross Madden

Just a quick heads up – I updated the Viper’s Video Quicktags, the MCEComments, and the Twitter Widget Pro plugins today.  MCEComments and TWP were simply updated.  Viper’s Video Quicktags was turned off for automatic use.  It has some issues working otherwise.  So, if you want to use it to embed video from YouTube etc into your site, you will need to Activate it within the Plugins tool in your administrative interface.  Enjoy!

BioWS Workshop

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009, 2:30 pm MT - posted by Ross Madden

Here is an e-mail I sent out to the list bio_dept a little while ago:

Dear All,

I am pleased to announce a new project from BioIT – Biology Web Services, BioWS. In today’s high tech world an attractive, functional and informative website has become par for the course with any endeavor. However, up until now labs, research groups, and most other Biology affiliates needed to scrounge in order to find personnel with the skill, free time, and patience to develop these sites. No more I say!

I have just installed a Wordpress MU (Multi User) instance onto our web server, and have integrated it into Pangea and eID!

What does this mean? Well, a lot. Wordpress is a Content Management System (CMS) that revolves around the popular WeBLOGging software by the same name. This free software allows for a website to be developed and maintained through a Web Administration Program. That is right! No more Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, PHP, JIBBER JABBER – you just log in, select the page you want to edit, and go to town!

I hope I have peaked some interest in at least a few of you, and don’t want to go into too much detail right now. I do believe this is something you need to see, and am therefore holding a workshop on BioWS next week Thursday, April 23rd from 4:00pm to 5:00pm in A/Z E112! Included in this is a demo on how you can create a great looking website in no time at all – we are starting right at 4:00pm so don’t be late!

Welcome to BioWS

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009, 11:03 am MT - posted by Ross Madden

BioWS (Biology Web Services) provides an easy to use, Wordpress installation for the Department of Biology affiliates!  Wordpress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.  More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your web development software, not fight it.

This is the root for the project and will contain all updates, theme additions, plugin inclusions and any other BioWS related news.  Stay tuned for information on a Workshop BioIT will be holding to introduce you all to the project!
