  WELCOME!

To the 17TH INTERNATIONAL CHROMOSOME CONFERENCE

       June 23rd 2009 through June 26th 2009

The International Chromosome Series began in 1964 under the title Oxford Chromosome Conference. From 1964 to 1974, the meetings were held every two years. The meetings were then changed to a three year schedule. Recently, the conference was changed back to the historical two-year schedule. This, the 17th ICC, will be the first to be held in the United States!

The 2009 International Chromosome Conference takes place in Boone, a small town in western North Carolina, in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. The conference is scheduled for Tuesday June 23rd through Friday June 26th at the Broyhill Inn & Appalachian Conference Center near the campus of Appalachian State Univerisity. The local organizers have chosen not only a scenically spectacular setting, but also a historic one as four chromosome conferences in the 1980s and early 1990s were held there. The city was named after the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone. So, don your coon-skin hats, sharpen up your flint-lock musket skills (or bring your golf clubs) and come participate in cutting edge chromosome science in these beautiful surroundings.

The tentative titles for the sessions are: Centromeres and Neocentromeres, Chromatin and Chromosome Structure, Epigenetics and Gene Expression, Chromosome and Genome Evolution, Advances in Imaging and Molecular Technology, Nuclear Architecture, Polyploidy, Aneuploidy and Chromosome Abberrations, Specialized Chromosomes (B, Sex, artifical), Telomeres, Chromosomes in Genome Sequencing and Analysis, Heterochromatin and Repeated Sequences, and Meiosis and Recombination. In addition to these sessions, we will have a welcome Carolina-stlye barbeque Tuesday evening and a banquet Friday night. We have planned no concurrent sessions, and each evening will be free for socializing and scientific discussion among participants. On Saturday, optional after-conference tours and activities (including rafting, hiking, and sight-seeing) will be available.
