I am Christine Prins, and I am a Master's student in the Pilon-Smits lab. My research has two different facets that center around the ecology of Selenium Hyperaccumulators. The first aspect is exploring the effect of high Selenium in the plant reproductive tissues. I am using Brassica juncea and Stanleya pinnata pollen to test pollen tube germination and pollen viability. Also in Brassica juncea, I am conducting crosses between different Selenium amounts to see any reproductive effects. I am also bringing Stanleya pinnata plants to a beehive to explore pollinator preferences. The other aspect of my research is to examine below-ground interactions of hyperaccumulators and nematodes. I am examining root nematodes from Selenium hyperaccumuators Stanleya pinnata and Astragalus bisulcatus from the field and S. pinnata from the greenhouse for differences in high and low levels of Selenium.
