Field Research Technicians
Job Description
The SHORTGRASS STEPPE LONG TERM ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM is funded by the National Science Foundation. The SGS-LTER is accepting Resumes for the year 2008 Summer Field Crew. The position will start July 14th, 2008 and run through August 22nd , 2008, before classes begin. This is a 40 hour per week (Monday-Friday) STUDENT HOURLY POSITION; pay will be $10.00/hour. Transportation is provided to the research area daily from CSU. The research site facilities include a full kitchen, dorms, computer room, library, laboratory and reference collection.

WORK EXPERIENCE YOU WILL OBTAIN:
  • Working outdoors in the field, including some nights on the SHORTGRASS STEPPE
  • The Ability to IDENTIFY PRAIRIE FLORA & FAUNA
  • Working on Experiments designed here at CSU and in conjunction with other Institutions
  • Study the impacts of grazing and disturbances, such as fire
  • Ocular population counts of Prairie Dogs for population estimates
  • Study the impacts of removing dominant plant species from the ecosystem
  • Study the impacts of grazing on mountain plover habitat
  • Monitor plant phenology, net primary production, and population and community dynamics using several different sampling methods and sample belowground biomass
  • Monitor lagomorphs, canids, birds, and small mammals populations
  • Live pitfall trap and identify arthropods for inventory and prey base
  • Maintain field station facilities and field experiment equipment and treatments
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid United States Driver's License
  • CSU Student
  • Willingness to work long hours in remote locations and adverse conditions
  • Good attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills
USEFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED:
  • Field or class experience with plant identification
  • Field or class experience with range measurement techniques
  • Field or class experience with arthropod identification
  • Field or class experience with small mammal identification, trapping, handling and ornithology
